Kilmartin Museum’s Redevelopment, 2021 to 2023
Kilmartin Museum was founded in 1997 by Rachel Butter and David Clough. Since then, Kilmartin Museum has inspired and educated people by interpreting, explaining and conserving the internationally important archaeological landscape, artefacts and natural heritage of Kilmartin Glen.
By 2012, our services and artefact collections had expanded to the point where we had outgrown our buildings. To give us the space we needed to build on our successes and continue our work, we developed an ambitious Redevelopment Project. After years of planning and fundraising, building work started in April 2021.
A major extension, designed by award-winning architects Reiach and Hall, joins together two existing buildings to create a seamless Museum facility. This enables us to significantly develop our work and create an inspiring place where we can care for, celebrate, and tell the story of Kilmartin Glen and Mid Argyll.
The redevelopment provides:
a much larger exhibition space, giving us opportunities to tell many more visitors the story of this special place
a creative space, which can be used to deliver and participate in cultural activities as well as allowing us to stage temporary exhibitions
an accessible research and learning facility where we can safely curate all our collections
A fit-for-purpose education space, allowing us to develop our Active Learning and Volunteering Programme.
The redeveloped Kilmartin Museum opened its doors to the public on 3rd September 2023. If you haven’t visited already, we hope to welcome you soon!
